Stuart Hata of the de Young Museum store writes to tell us that Judy Dater has just signed 186 more copies of Only Human, TOP's 2017 Book of the Year, for the Museum. "All proceeds from museum store purchases directly support the Museum and help fund programs such as Judy's upcoming exhibition at the de Young opening on April 7 through September 16, 2018. Thank you all for your support." (Purchases of this book don't help TOP at all—just trying to help put it in peoples' hands.)

Ken Tanaka: "I'd like to add that if you have never visited San Francisco's de Young Museum you're missing a treat. I made my first visit to it this past June. It's a lovely, mid-size museum with quite an eclectic collection. The building itself is remarkable, sitting in the middle of Golden Gate Park, not far from the Haight-Ashbury area, ground-zero mecca for the '70s hippie world. (During my visit the museum had an exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 'Summer of Love.' Let's just say it was a 'trip.') So...'If you're goin' to San Francisco, just pick-up Judy's book while you're there?' (Apologies to Scott McKenzie.)"
Ray Hunter: "Of the many benefits of contributing to, and reading, TOP, nothing exceeds the superior book recommendations Mike offers. As a long-time photobook addict, I am trying to slow the number of purchases. But, if Mr. Johnson gives the 'thumbs up,' I listen. Thanks for that, Mike. Never have I been disappointed."
Mike replies: Thanks Ray!
QT Luong: "Shipping from the museum store was fast and professional with several notices, and since I live not far, inexpensive. The book is a gem, and what's remarkable is that, even accounting for 'listmas,' nobody else in the photography world had singled it out as a 2017 standout. When I say that, I am referring to about 100 makers of lists of best, notable, or favorite 2017 photobooks that I am compiling to produce the 2017 meta-list."
I received an email today, that the copy I ordered has shipped. Can't wait!

If you go to the de Young and have the time, the view from the roof is worth a few minutes.

Mike, thank you for the recommendation, I ordered a copy from the museum the day after you posted, and the shipping was estimated to be in mid-January. I received the notification yesterday that it should be at my door during the first week of January. Thank you again, your book recommendations have always been stellar.

I visited the de Young today for another exhibit (I'm lucky to live nearby) and bought the book. And a de Young membership. That got me 10% off the book, and admission to the show. It also turns out that the membership is deductible for tax purposes, so that was a nice little 12/31/17 bennie.
Thanks for the recommendation, Mike!
