About ten years ago, I bought an Epson printer. To my (untrained) eyes, the results were very satisfying from the get go. However, after just a few weeks and maybe 30 prints, the feeder system started to put a (slight) crease on all sheets running through it. And it was on standard matte paper, not one of the heavier ones. The printer went to service twice, to no avail. I gave up on printing ; you don't start printing at home to produced creased prints.

At the very beginning of the photographic printers era, Epson launched an A4 only model that was well reviewed. But it never updated this model with newer inks and tech, as far as I know. Maybe I'm a contrarian because nothing prevents you running letter size in a larger printer, but these beasts are huge. I would have probably tried my hand at printing again if I could have had a modern A4 printer of moderate size. I just didn't want to have a printer as the focal point of my living room anymore.

@Tullio Emanuele suggests using an Epson ET 8550. We have had one of these for several years now. It's excellent for home office printing, vastly cheaper than using a small-tank printer. The document feeder is a bit fragile, but can be coaxed into working well.
However it's not worth considering using it for photo prints, IMHO. The image quality is not remotely in the same league as our old 3880. I'm sure the newer Canon and Epson are better still.
Our B9180 love/hate experience was the same!
