So, did anyone take advantage of Nikon's big lens sale yet? If you did, whadja get?
I've been very happy with my new 28mm ƒ/1.8G on the D800. It's a fine lens, especially for a fast wide, and especially for a consumer-grade fast wide.
At the same time, it's not good enough to keep me from being desperately tempted by Nikon's stellar 35mm ƒ/1.4G, which I rented with the D800E when I first tried it. 35mm is home base for me, and I've used dozens of them over the years, and there is something really special about that lens...or, I should say, there was something really special about it on the D800E. But I just cannot afford it, no how, no way, even with the nice little discount. I already have far more than enough good lenses to do anything I want to photographically. I do not need one more. I do not deserve one more. I cannot afford one more. And I've never spent that much on a 35mm, not even on the Leica lenses I've owned (I do have a Summilux ASPH in the house, but it's borrowed, not mine).
I understand this sale only lasts for eight more days, so that's as long as I have to hold out. After that, just having missed the sale will help me greatly to resist.
If anybody can tell me anything bad about that big 35mm, that might help.
Mike

John Camp: "You know what I'd like? I'd like you, as a known lens guru, to explain why you'd want the ƒ/1.4 instead of the ƒ/1.8. Is there anything that the ƒ/1.4 could do for you that you couldn't get with the ƒ/1.8 and a little Photoshop or Lightroom? Because I looked at the prices of the two lenses while standing in a camera store, knowing little about them, and went for the ƒ/1.8, figuring if there was a little barrel or pincushion I could fix it...Am I a bad human being?"
Mike replies: There's coverage. The ƒ/1.8 is an APS-C lens, which I think Nikon calls "DX." It's not meant to cover full frame.
As to what kind of human being you are, that's something we're going to have to let God, Jesus, and Santa Claus hash out amongst themselves!
John responds: "All right, I'm stupid. I bought the 50mm ƒ/1.8, not the 35mm."
Mike replies: Oh. Confusion, okay. Never mind.
By the way I checked with Santa et al. and they all agree you're not stupid. (Besides, you're a TOP reader, and all TOP readers are above average.)
